Star Wars: The Clone Wars returns for 12 new episodes!

Eat laser, clanker! The animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars returns for 12 new episodes, available only on Disney’s unnamed, yet-to-be-released Netflix competitor. A trailer was shown and the episodes were announced at San Diego Comic-Con. There is no release date, and certainly no promise that we’ll see anything past the dozen episodes. Still, fans have been clamouring for answers to some unresolved character arcs for years, following the series’ cancellation in 2014.

The series first aired in October 2008, preceded by a pilot film in August to kick off the series. The film was panned by critics, but the show itself became the most-watched premiere in Cartoon Network history, and it soon found critical success. It saw the return of characters like Darth Maul and Boba Fett, and introduced countless fresh faces, like wayfarer Asajj Ventress and bounty hunter Cad Bane. Lead character Ahsoka Tano, Anakin’s Jedi apprentice, went from fan hate to a standout fan favourite over the series’ runtime.

The best part about the show were the titular clones: genetically identical soldiers clad in white armour who served the Jedi. In the films, these clone soldiers were dutiful and obedient. In the show, clone ranks were made up of Republic loyalists, undecided wayfarers, and even traitors, which made for several interesting stories. As these new episodes continue the Clone Wars story (unlike Star Wars: Rebels, which takes place years later), the clone characters are back – and in greater numbers.
